Swami Vivekanand’s Birth Anniversary being celebrated today across the country.  

PM Modi has paid glowing tributes to Swami Vivekananda on his Jayanti. He said that the life of Swami Vivekananda always inspires patriotism, spirituality and hard work.

Born on 12th January 1863 in Kolkata, Swami Vivekananda (birth name Narendranath Datta) was an Indian Hindu monk, philosopher, author, religious teacher, and the chief disciple of the Indian mystic Ramakrishna. He made seminal contributions in introducing Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world.  

He became a popular person after the 1893 Parliament of Religions in Chicago, where he began his famous speech with the words, “Sisters and brothers of America…,” before introducing Hinduism to Americans 

He founded Ramakrishna Mission, Advaita Ashrama and Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College.  

He tragically, passed away on 4 July 1902 at a relatively young age of 39.
