Ya Chandi Madhukaitabhadi….: The First Song of Mahishashura Mardini

Mahalaya is a set of songs, some in Bengali and few in Sanskrit, traditionally sung at the start of Durga Puja, inviting the godess to the earth for a 10-day worship and festivity. It was recorded as ”Mahishasure Mardini” in 1931, and was first broadcast over the radio ”Akashvani, Calcutta.

”Ya Chandi” is the first of the Sanskrit hymns sung in it, in praise of Goddess Chandi, another manifestation of Goddess Durga.

It has remained unchanged retaining its charm as a symbol of Bengali Durga Puja even after almost century.
