On 8th November 2016, Modi government had resorted demonetarisation of high value currency notes (INR 500 and INR 1000) which had inconvenienced many people. The act was whole heartedly supported by ruling party but widely criticised by the opposition. There was plethora of litigation. The Supreme Court of India delivered its much-awaited judgement on 02 January 2023 in Vivek Narayan Sharma Vs Union of India Writ Petition (Civil) No.906 Of 2016. By a majority verdict, the court validated the action of the government.

The three main national political parties of India reacted very differently to each other on this much awaited verdict of Supreme Court of India

1. BJP

2. Congress

“To say that demonetisation has been upheld by the Honourable Supreme Court is totally misleading and wrong. One Hon’ble Judge in her dissenting opinion has said that Parliament should not have been bypassed.”

-Shri @Jairam_Ramesh’s statement on SC’s verdict on Demonetisation.

Mallikarjun Kharge , President: Indian National Congress

3. Communist Party of India – CPI

Supreme Court has decided merely on the legality of demonetisation and not whether it was a correct decision.

A decision conforming to four walls of law does not make it moral or pro-people.

People suffered, that’s the truth. We seek accountability for that!
