On the other hand, former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, who is angry with the Congress, did not appear in this function. Besides Channi, Congress leaders OP Soni and Sukhjinder S Randhawa also took oath as ministers.

From being elected as the President of the City Council to being elected as the first Chief Minister from the Dalit community in Punjab, Charanjit Singh Channi’s stature continued to grow in politics over the past two decades.

Channi, a three-time MLA from Chamkaur Sahib assembly constituency in Punjab’s Rupnagar district, had joined the Congress in 2012 and was handling the departments of Technical Education, Industrial Training, Employment Generation and Tourism and Cultural Affairs in the Captain Amarinder Singh-led cabinet. Channi had revolted against Amarinder Singh along with three other ministers, sided with the camp of state Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu.
